Rotary Club of Vigan Family: Stepping up for Ocean Conservation

Year after year, the Rotary Club of Vigan, including our families, Interact and Rotaract Clubs participate in the International Coastal Clean-up Month. As the RC Vigan First Class team wanted to make it a more significant endeavor this year,  we stepped up  and signed up to the 28th Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) -Philippines, to create awareness among the new generation and the local community on the importance of keeping our ocean debris-free but also to teach  them how to segregate the debris collected.

Typhoon "Odette" that brought heavy rains, strong winds and isolated floods in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte derailed our clean up schedule to Sept. 28,2013, but never dampened our excitement and  eagerness to clean up the coastal area. And surely, the Rotary Club participation to the ICC made Brgy. Sived, Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur our beneficiary and turned out a blast! We had a total of 341 volunteers from the Rotary Family and different government and private sectors: Sto. Domingo Municipal Office Employees, Rural Health Office, local  community members, Philippine National Police Sto. Domingo Chapter, Bureau of Fire and Protection, Philippine Red Cross , the Department of Agrarian Reform and the Adventure Riders of Ilocos Sur. A total of  58.24 kg of various debris were collected, from 1 km of coastal shore. The Rotarians led the debris segregation with the spouses and Rotakids and members of the  Interact Clubs of  Naglaoa-an National High School, Caoayan National High School, Lussoc National High School, Ilocos Sur National High School and University of Northern Philippines High School Department and Rotaract Club of Macro College.

Environmental awareness was further fortified with simultaneous mangrove and coconut planting along the shoreline.
